Currently we are working on...
Fundations: Letter formation, letter recognition, and letter sound recognition: identifying letters with fluency and associating a keyword/picture and sound with each letter. we are incorporating many songs and daily routines to reinforce these skills.
You can support this at home by practicing letter formation, letter naming fluency, and using the alphabet chart that was sent home to have your child practice letter/picture/sound recognition.
Name writing: writing our names daily, as well as other name activities including building with letters, letter stamps, and play doh.
You can support this at home by having your child practice writing their name correctly.
Reader's workshop: reading from book baskets that contain letter, color, and number books; shared reading books and poems, familiar texts.
Shared reading experiences: these poems and stories incorporate high frequency words, supportive pictures, and one to one match of words. By the end of the week, the students can read these independently.
You can support this at home by using the Raz Kids program, in place of our normal book in the bag program!
High frequency words: my, me, see, the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that
(If your child knows these words, feel free to continue with the list.)
We learn two new words each week.
I will soon be sending home HFW rings in an envelope in your child's folder (For now, this will replace the index card rings back at Elm.)
You can support this at home be practicing the words on the HFW word list and your child's word ring when it comes home.
Writer's Workshop: We are currently working on personal narrative writing about familiar experiences. Students are encouraged to think of something thing they have done, somewhere they have been, or someone they spend time with. They are encouraged to draw a picture to tell their story, label the picture with initial sounds, and/or attempt to write a sentence on the line using initial sounds
You would be amazed at what they can do already!
You can support this by encouraging your child to tell you stories about things they have done and ideas they have for writing!
Math: we are finishing our unit on sorting and matching by attribute. This week, we will be starting a unit on shapes and colors. Every day we review identifying numbers 1-10, shapes, colors, ten frames, and counting to 100.
You can support this at home with number and shape recognition. We will be starting number formation shortly.
Science/ Social Studies: we are working on classroom community and seasons.
Classroom community: We are working on having self control of our bodies, being mindful of personal space, listening to a story, and showing kindness and respect for our classroom and our classmates.
You can support this at home by having daily discussions with your child regarding these topics and how their day was.
I can not thank you enough for all of the support and patience this past month! Together we made it a seamless and exciting transition for all students, and we are "over the hump"!
